Chapter 3
They're the thirds.
The sea does not speak, not in any human tongue. She hears it all the same. It's in the waves, in the currents, in the bite of the salt in her mouth- the ocean has a language she's become fluent in, and every little sound is telling her it's coming, it's coming, it's coming, it's coming.
She hasn't set foot on solid soil in nearly a decade. Could not set foot on solid soil. It would kill her to do so, and that is not a hyperbole. The earth is toxic to her. Being away from water makes her sick. The further she walks from the shore the further her agony deepens, her lungs no longer made to breathe unsalted air.
It won't be pleasant, to go back to her hometown. At least there's a sizeable portion of the way she can travel by water. By the time she makes it there, hopefully, she'll be able to lean on him the rest of the way.
Ah, this man... her rival. Her best friend. The other half of her coin. She's missed him. She's missed him like a bad tooth, like a cavity aching at the back of her mouth. They call, every once in a while, but she wishes she could see his face. Ah, this man.
This land-bound man, forced to live in the belly of the Earth.
It will kill her, to go back. It will kill him too. But this is the end of their run regardless. They'll get another shot at it soon enough, but first, for this one, for this death- she'd like to see him, one last time.
It's coming, she hears as the waves crash against her boat, it's coming, it's coming, it's coming,
"Ah, old friend," she whispers to no one, she whispers to the sky, "I can't wait to see you again."
DilithiumDragon: Oof, this one's tone is definitely more soaked in blood. (If that makes any sense.) The sea and the land must meet again for their deaths, but they will be born anew. They have to be.
(I'd be curious to see your take on the fourths and their rebirths. I know I wouldn't have kind things to say about it lol)
Anyway I love all of these, they are very fun reads to chew. Thanks!!
