Remakes

Chapter 1

He's the first one.

It's in the air. It's in the snow. It's whispered by the wind curling around Mt Silver, it's written in shadows over the walls of that cave that has been his home for years, it's at the tip of his fingers and inside of his lungs his cells his bones pulsing purring pounding against his chest-

It's time. It's time. It's time. It's time.

It takes him a while, to get down. After all this time- he had forgotten how to. That is fine, though. That means he can properly admire the scenery on the way down. It's incredible, how different the world looks, knowing this is the last time he's seeing it. Has the stones always been so vibrant? Has the roads always been so colorful?  Oh, how beautiful it is, this world of his. Oh, how blessed he is, to get to discover it all over again.

His hometown has changed, too. Some people have moved away. The old lab has been renovated. He knows right away which house is relevant to his interests. He watches the Sun set in the distance, yellow-orange-red (gods, the colors, the colors, he swears there were not as many colors when he was a child) and when the night falls, he sneaks in through the window.

They're twins. They're still babies, of course. Still- the boy looks so much like him already. He wonders how this kid will grow up. As for the girl, she's a stranger. He feels like he's known her for years.

Fire and Leaf, huh.

He does not speak. He never has. He cannot call these children by their name. He can't tell them he loves them- wouldn't even know how to tell them, doesn't know the right words to express this affection older than the world yet devoid of any reason.

He does not speak. Instead, he leans down, and kiss them each on the forehead.

Blue will have her adventure at last. She's been denied it for so long. It's good. He's happy. He's happy for her and happy for himself, and though his heart has long stopped along his internal battery, he finds himself smiling.

Ten years. He's had a long run, for a video game.

DilithiumDragon: Wow was it really ten years from Red/Blue to Fire Red/Leaf Green? That's such a long time.

You're right, this does fuck. The concept of an old protagonist visiting their next iteration and loving them, that's so soft. I feel the same level as Red about how different and new and wonderful the remakes were. (Also shoutout to the internal battery of Red/Blue, mine is still well and kicking somehow lol)
